Welcome, Talha! Can you please tell us a little about yourself?

Hello! My name is Talha Ameen, and I’m from Pakistan. I’m currently a Master’s student in the High-Tech Business Management program at ITMO University. My academic journey started in healthcare – I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm-D) from Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST) and worked as a clinical pharmacist before transitioning into the world of high-tech business management.

I have always been passionate about innovation, especially in healthcare and public health systems. This led me to explore how technology can transform industries, improve accessibility, and create sustainable solutions.

That’s an interesting academic transition. What made you choose Russia for your Master’s studies?

The Russian education system is known for its strong research focus, affordability, and international opportunities. St. Petersburg in particular is a beautiful and vibrant place with a rich cultural heritage. Winning the Open Doors Scholarship made this dream even more accessible by covering the tuition fees and allowing me to focus entirely on my studies and research.

Congratulations on winning the scholarship! What convinced you to choose ITMO as your first priority?

While researching universities specializing in technology and innovation management, I came across ITMO. What stood out for me were its global reputation, hands-on approach to learning, and strong connections with high-tech industries. ITMO isn’t just about theoretical knowledge; it emphasizes practical applications, entrepreneurship, and interdisciplinary research. That’s exactly what I was looking for. The diverse international student community and ITMO’s focus on preparing students for real-world challenges made it an easy decision for me.

What excites you the most about your program?

The most exciting part is the ability to bridge the gap between advanced technology and real-world business applications. I’m particularly interested in how innovative technologies can be commercialized and scaled to improve healthcare systems, public health policies, and medical accessibility. My program allows me to explore the economic, managerial, and strategic aspects of high-tech industries, which are crucial for driving sustainable growth and solving real-world challenges. The potential to create impactful, technology-driven solutions in healthcare is what keeps me motivated.

How would you describe your learning experience so far?

It has been incredibly enriching. My curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with practical applications, which makes learning more interactive and industry-focused. The professors are highly knowledgeable and supportive, and the multicultural environment has been an eye-opener. I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with students from different backgrounds, which has greatly broadened my perspective.

What has been the most valuable lesson from your Master’s program so far?

Adaptability and continuous learning. Technology and innovation evolve rapidly, so staying updated on the latest trends is crucial. I’ve also learned the importance of strategic thinking, data-driven decision-making, and effective leadership – especially in industries like healthcare, where technology plays a transformative role.

How has your daily routine changed since moving to St. Petersburg?

My routine has become more structured and disciplined. My days are filled with lectures, project work, and research, but I also take time to explore the city’s history and architecture. Adapting to Russia’s colder climate was a challenge at first, but now I’ve embraced it – even trying out winter activities!

That is so cool. So what were some of the challenges you faced when adapting to life in Russia?

The language barrier and cold weather were the biggest challenges. Simple daily tasks like shopping, commuting, and ordering food were difficult in the beginning, but I’ve been gradually improving my Russian skills. The cultural differences were also a learning curve, but Russians are very welcoming once you get to know them, which made my transition easier!

You also recently traveled to Saudi Arabia and visited Mecca. Can you share that experience with us?

Visiting Mecca was one of the most spiritual and humbling experiences of my life. Performing Umrah and standing in the holy city alongside millions of pilgrims was truly unforgettable. The sense of peace, unity, and devotion was overwhelming. It was a reminder of the importance of faith, gratitude, and humility – something that I carry with me in my daily life and studies.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy exploring new places, reading books on technology and innovation, and staying active with sports like cricket and badminton. I also love attending cultural events and learning about different traditions. Recently, I had the chance to organize a Pakistan Culture Night at ITMO, where we showcased traditional cuisine, music, and games. It was an amazing experience bringing people together and sharing a piece of my culture with the ITMO community.

Have you traveled to other Russian cities?

Yes! I visited Vyborg and the Yagodnoe camp. Vyborg is a charming city with Russian and Finnish influences, and its medieval castle was a highlight. Yagodnoe, on the other hand, was a peaceful retreat into nature – a refreshing break from city life.

Have you tried Russian cuisine? Any favorite dishes?

I haven’t explored much of Russian cuisine yet, but I plan to! Borscht and pelmeni are on my list, and I’m excited to try them soon.

What are your plans after completing your Master’s degree?

I want to work in technology and innovation, focusing on healthcare solutions. Whether in consulting, entrepreneurship, or tech-driven public health, my goal is to create impactful, sustainable innovations. I am also open to pursuing a PhD in the future, depending on how my career unfolds.

Would you consider staying in Russia to work after graduation?

Absolutely. Russia’s growing tech industry offers many opportunities, and St. Petersburg feels like home now. If the right opportunity comes along, I’d love to contribute to the innovation ecosystem here.

Finally, what advice would you give to future ITMO students?

Embrace the journey! ITMO is a place of growth, innovation, and opportunities. Be proactive, step out of your comfort zone, and take advantage of everything the university has to offer. And if you’re eligible, apply for the Open Doors Scholarship – it’s a life-changing opportunity!
