Hi Mariam! Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello! My name is Mariam, I’m from Syria, and I’m currently studying for a Master’s degree in food technology at ITMO University.
What brought you to ITMO?
I’ve always been fascinated by Russian culture and dreamed of studying here. ITMO stood out to me not just for its strong academic reputation, but also for being located in one of the most beautiful cities in the world – St. Petersburg.
You have a background in pharmacy. What inspired you to shift your focus to food technology?
I wanted to combine my knowledge of chemistry and biology with the food sciences. I realized that food technology opens up a lot of career opportunities, and it’s an exciting, growing field that connects well with my pharmacy background.
What has been the biggest difference between your academic experience in Syria and your current studies in Russia?
The Russian language makes everything more challenging, for sure! But I really appreciate that ITMO offers more than just academics – there are always interesting activities and events happening. It truly lives up to its slogan: it’s more than a university.
Can you tell us about your favorite subject or project so far?
One of my favorite courses was Artificial Intelligence for Flavor Aromas Prediction. It was fascinating to learn how machine learning can be applied in the food industry. Using AI in our field really opened my eyes to the future possibilities.
Food technology is a rapidly evolving field. What areas interest you the most?
I’m especially drawn to nutrition and food safety. We’re living in a time when more people are focused on healthy lifestyles, and I want to help create foods that support that shift.

How do you see your pharmacy background complementing your work in food technology?
Pharmacy gave me a strong foundation in biochemistry, toxicology, and human biology. That knowledge helps me understand how our bodies react to different foods and what “healthy” truly means on a scientific level.
Food technology plays a big role in public health. Where do you hope to make a difference?
I’d love to help people live healthier lives through better food. I believe food is one of the most powerful ways we can take care of our health. Combining my pharmacy background with food biotech could help improve the quality of food and its impact on the human body.
What was your first impression of St. Petersburg, and what do you enjoy most about being here?
It’s a magical city, and I fell in love with every small detail. The people here are generally friendly, and they know how to enjoy life. I feel lucky to be living and studying here.
What’s one Russian dish you’ve tried that surprised you and one Syrian dish you’d recommend to Russians?
I tried the Russian salad seledka pod shuboi (herring under fur coat – Ed.) – I didn’t expect that unusual mix of ingredients to taste so good! As for Syrian food, I think many Russians already know and love shawarma, and I was pleasantly surprised by how popular it is here.
How are you handling the Russian language? Any fun or memorable stories?
I'm doing my best! It’s definitely not an easy language. I still struggle with pronouncing the letter “Ы,” and honestly, I’m not sure I’m saying it right even now! :)

What are your hopes after graduation?
Right now, I’m focused on the industrial side. I’m not that into research at the moment, but who knows? Maybe one day I’ll start something of my own.
How has ITMO’s international environment shaped your experience?
It’s amazing to meet students from different countries and cultures. Talking with them gives me new perspectives, and sometimes, ideas for future projects or collaborations.

What advice would you give to other Syrian or international students considering ITMO?
It’s an absolutely great experience to have, and a great university to choose! You’ll grow personally and professionally here.
Lastly, how has this academic journey changed you? What have you learned about yourself?
Living in a completely different country has definitely changed me. It has made me more adaptable and grateful. I’ve discovered that I can adjust quickly to new environments, and that makes me feel confident for whatever comes next.
