Free tours of the Petrogradsky District

Want to practice your Russian and learn more about St. Petersburg’s architectural legacy? All throughout the month, St. Petersburg historical buildings preservation activists will be giving free tours of the art-nouveau-central Petrogradsky District. The initiative aims to raise awareness of Basevich’s House, which is under the threat of demolition, and other art-nouveau landmarks in the area. Each of the tour guides will have their own program, but all tours will focus on the buildings’ architectural uniqueness, interior quirks and personal histories of the inhabitants. The first tour will be given by the author of the saintpstory Instagram blog.

“It’s Always Teatime” exhibition

The mad tea party never stops at the It’s Always Teatime exhibition, featuring works by 80 artists from all over the world all themed around Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and that particular get-together. The event is jointly organized by the Consulate General of Estonia and Pushkin Library in celebration of the 155th anniversary of the book’s first edition.

“100 Photographs: An image of Russian history from the postwar period up to the present day” exhibition

Anatoly Boldin is one of the veterans of photography based in Moscow. His professional and creative development coincided with the period of transformations in the culture and science of the USSR in 1950s and 1960s. The exhibition, consisting of 100 black-and-white and color prints made between 1957 and 2010, is the first comprehensive presentation of Boldin’s work to the St. Petersburg audience. 

The exhibition includes original prints exploring various genres and subjects: from photographic etudes, popular in the sixties, to formal experiments with cameraless photography, or photogram, from the scenes of student life and sporting events to genre scenes captured by the author in Moscow, Leningrad, Lvov, Saratov, Gorky, Bukhara, Ust-Kamenogorsk, Sevastopol and other places of the former USSR. 

St. Pugsantine’s Day

And I will always love… pugs: this Sunday, swing round the majestic Palma creative space to celebrate the only February holiday that has rights, St. Pugsantine’s Day. There will be pugs in costumes, pugs in a show, pugs all around, plus a market with various pug merch and food (not from pugs). The organizers are quick to warn you that the tickets are subject to limited availability (note that they’re cheaper if bought in advance) and that it’s not a pug fair but just one huge celebration of pugs.
