Invisible Material: Researchers Model Metasurfaces in Hybrid Anapole Modes for the First Time
Global trends are leaning towards miniaturization, minimalism, and portability – and that's the case for research, too. These days, metasurfaces are gaining popularity as platforms for super-thin devices equal, or sometimes superior to, their "normal-sized" counterparts. This is achieved thanks to “invisible” particles in anapole modes. Recently, these particles have revolutionized nanophotonics, but researchers from ITMO, Moscow, and Riga went even further and developed hybrid anapole modes. Their new model is more efficient than its predecessors and opens new applications for metasurfaces in optics.

First Time in Such Detail: Researchers Analyze Surface Properties of Spider Web
PhD students and researchers from ITMO’s SCAMT Institute and their collaborators from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) have analyzed the surface properties of the Linothele fallax spider’s silk and how they affect the properties of the material as a whole. The study demonstrates that spider web can be used in both surgery and food packaging.

ITMO Researchers & Collaborators Develop New Algorithm for Linking Genes and Specific Diseases
Researchers from ITMO’s Laboratory of Genomic Diversity and the World-Class Research Centre for Personalized Medicine have developed GPrior (gene prioritizer), an algorithm that uses data from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify the genes responsible for a particular disease. For this study, the group used the data on schizophrenia, coronary heart disease, and inflammatory bowel diseases to test the algorithm. ITMO University researchers in collaboration with scientists from the Australian National University and Korea University have demonstrated the generation of laser radiation in anapole states (modes) for the first time. An international team of researchers from ITMO’s School of Physics and Engineering and Tor Vergata University of Rome found a way to increase the efficiency of perovskite-based solar cells. The project was supported by a Russian Science Foundation grant and its results were described in a paper published in Nano Energy.

Scientists From ITMO and the US Assemble New Reference Genomes of Two Malaria Mosquito Species
This project will help researchers better understand the genetics of insects spreading this dangerous disease. For instance, biologists got the opportunity to search for regions of mosquito genomes responsible for connection with the pathogen and for their feeding behavior. The authors of the project believe that in the future they will provide their colleagues with new tools to prevent the spread of malaria. The results of the project were published in GigaScience.

The labels can be used to mark various electronics, medicine, and jewelry. Their authenticity can only be checked with special equipment, thus providing additional protection against fake merchandise. The research is published in Advanced Materials.

Scientists Predict Two-Photon Analog to Quantum Hall Effect
The discovery of the quantum Hall effect once got its authors a Nobel prize. Previously, it has only been observed in very complex semiconductor structures with an external magnetic field. ITMO scientists and their colleagues predicted a photonic analog to the quantum Hall effect in a much simpler system – a chain of particles in a waveguide, which opens up new opportunities for creating quantum memory and quantum simulators.

ITMO Researchers Develop Biocompatible Support Device for Artificial Organs
Scientists from ITMO University have used liquid metal and agarose hydrogel to design miniature resistors, capacitors, diodes, and memristors that can be embedded in artificial organs to allow the nervous system to control these implants.
