• PhD Student Mikhail Maslyaev: Science Gives More Opportunities for Growth

  January 21 is celebrated as PhD Student Day in Russia. Over the years, ITMO has welcomed hundreds of PhD students who graduate to pursue an academic career or use their degree for a transition between different research fields. This was the case for Mikhail Maslyaev, who graduated from the Faculty of Geography of the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), where he studied meteorology and climate modeling, and then got into machine learning. Now, as a PhD student at ITMO he works at the recently launched Laboratory for Composite AI and specializes in modeling physical systems. Read on to learn how to transition from meteorology to machine learning and being a researcher is more appealing than working at Yandex.

• EduStars Winner Marina Barantseva: Teaching the Way I’d Want to Be Taught

  Marina Barantseva started out as a professional linguist and translator and worked in marketing for ten years before deciding to completely reinvent her life. She followed her childhood dream to become a teacher; for the past three years, she has been teaching English to university students. Last year, she won the ITMO EduStars contest of best academic practices. In this interview, we asked her about the trick to motivating students to attend 8 am classes and the reasons lecturers need to continuously learn something new.

• Physicist Tatiana Orlova On New Materials for Soft Robotics and Working in Europe

  In 2007, Tatiana Orlova received her PhD in solid state and liquid crystals physics from the Institute of Physics of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences. Since then, she has collaborated with Strasbourg University and the University of Bordeaux in France, the University of Twente in the Netherlands, and the University of Southampton in England. Two years ago, she joined the ITMO Fellowship & Professorship program that brings together experts in different fields. In this interview, we asked Tatiana about her international experiences, the projects she is working on at ITMO, and the advice she’d give to young researchers.

• $3,000 for a Special Kid’s Drawing: How ITMO Student Uses NFT Auctions for Charity

  In the summer of 2021, Daniil Zuyev, a student at ITMO’s Computer Technologies in Design Bachelor’s program, created the Osobenny Mir (A Special World) project based on the drawings created by children from the Yom-Yom inclusive center. A charity project by design, Osobenny Mir donates half of its revenue from NFT auctions to the center. However, unexpectedly, it also opened the world of contemporary art to Daniil – selected works were showcased at a virtual exhibition at the Hermitage and the Disartive Art & Tech Fair in Nizhny Novgorod, and one of the drawings was purchased for 230,000 rubles (about $3,000). In this article, Daniil tells us how he decided to combine NFT and charity and what it feels like to suddenly become a contemporary artist.

  According to the latest admissions review, ITMO University is ranked among the top 5 universities in Russia that demonstrated great performances in terms of the overall quality of their admissions campaigns. The average Unified State Exam (USE) score among ITMO’s first-year students in 2021 has increased compared to previous figures and now reaches 93.7.

• Student Spotlight: Sharaf Ahdaf Souf, Bangladesh

  Sharaf is an international student at ITMO who came to St. Petersburg from Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is currently enrolled in ITMO’s Russian-language Foundation Program and will pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from next semester.
