ITMO University Debuts in THE Physical Sciences Ranking
The results of this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) subject ranking in Physical Sciences have been unveiled at a press conference as part of the 22nd seminar-conference of Project 5-100. The Physical Sciences ranking was presented by THE’s team of top officials and Editorial Director Phil Baty. ITMO University made its debut in the ranking, placing 401-500.

Young Scientists from ITMO University Receive Presidential Grants
On May 30, during a special ceremony, 53 young scientists from St. Petersburg's universities and institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg were given presidential grants. ITMO University was represented by five researchers who received grants in the Physics and Astronomy category. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, the researchers shared about their research.

For five weeks more than 800 players from all over the country solved entertaining physics problems of varying levels of difficulty and competed for the contest’s main prizes – branded merchandise from the university, tours of its labs and a chance to gain a 10-point bonus to their Unified State Exam results when applying to ITMO University.

Visiting Scientist Silvio Hrabar: Why It’s Important to Find New Uses for Old Discoveries
Being a scientist doesn’t just mean going to work – it means enjoying one’s work and turning it into a lifestyle, says Silvio Hrabar, ITMO University’s visiting scientist from University of Zagreb. He is conducting research into so-called “active” metamaterials which could provide a method of removing the physical limits of metamaterials. After all, these limits are the main reason why it’s so difficult to find an application for this technology. In an interview with ITMO.NEWS, Silvio Hrabar shared his thoughts on how this could be achieved, what should inspire a scientist and what are the advantages of bringing together physicists and mathematicians to study metamaterials.

“Physics: the Game of Light” - ITMO University and Newtonew Launch a New Online Game for School Students
ITMO and the Newtonew educational portal launch a new online game "Physics: the Game of Light", which is aimed at attracting talented and motivated applicants to study at the university. The participants will get the opportunity to check their grasp of physics, as well as earn up to 10 points that would be added to their Unified State Examination score.

Now You Can "Solve It!" at ITMO
In a little bit more than a month the All Russian Test on Physics, Math and Informatics "Solve It!" will take place in several large Russian Universities including ITMO University. Thanks to Yandex.Contest platform it will be possible to solve 15 tasks online. The main feature of the test is that any person can try to test his or her knowledge: a businessman, a politician, an actor, a humanitarian student…its organizers believe the more people will be involved, the more popular STEM disciplines will be. "SolveIt!" will take place on February 15, 2017.
