But the path she chose to do that cannot be called conventional: the specialist decided to pursue her Master’s at ITMO and create her own product – a recommendation system that can help doctors prescribe medications to arrhythmia patients and reduce errors in a clinical setting.   • Researchers Suggest New Way To Boost Perovskite Solar Cell Performance

    Scientists at ITMO University and their colleagues from the St. Petersburg Academic University and University of Tor Vergata (Italy) have developed high-performance perovskite solar cells. The improvement is thanks to the use of semiconductors based on wire-like nanocrystals. The technology is said to offer up new prospects for the production of next-gen solar power stations and optical devices. The results of the study were published in ACS Applied Energy Materials.

  • New Discovery Makes Cheap, Compact Lasers Possible

    Researchers from ITMO have demonstrated a novel technique for generation of laser radiation that utilizes perovskite metasurfaces. The solution will pave the way for next-gen lasers that are less than 100 nm thick and require significantly less energy. The invention can be incorporated into compact photonic chips for light control or used as an intense light source in medicine (e.g., for tissue or blood diagnostics), materials processing, astronomy, and other fields. The results of this study were published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials.

  • ITMO Researchers Develop Simple Technology for Fabrication of Microfluidic Elements on Glass

    Scientists from ITMO’s Institute of Laser Technologies have developed a new technology that creates structured microfluidic elements, including channels, reservoirs, and spirals, on a silica surface. Importantly, the novel fabrication method requires only a laser and a single operator, while the resulting structures can be used in microfluidic chips for biomedical research and diagnostics of cancer, diabetes, and cardiac impairments. The results of the study are described in a recent article in Optical and Quantum Electronics.

    All six projects selected by the expert board will now enter development and receive funding from the Priority 2030 program, with the first progress review slated for June 2023. The open call for projects is being held as part of the university’s 2030 Development Strategy.

  • ITMO Scientists Develop Ultracompact Optical Switch

    The new device includes a structure of single-atom semiconductors and an ultracompact nanoresonator. The switching is conducted with light, via changes in the exciton states in each of the two semiconductor layers. Thanks to its ultracompact size (10 nanometers long and 1.5 nanometers thick), the device can be placed on a chip for use as a logic element in computers for optical information processing. The results of this study, conducted in collaboration with Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH, South Korea), are described in an article published in ACS Nano.

  • Optical Innovations: ITMO Researchers Create Controllable On-Chip Topological States

    A research team featuring scientists from ITMO University and the City University of New York has successfully created controllable topological states that can be selectively excited on a silicon chip. This is the first time that such an effect was induced in the infrared range and inside a structure just a few microns in size. As proved in the article published in Nano Letters, the flexible control mechanism, as well as its on-chip implementation, can serve as a foundation for disorder-robust optical microchips.
