ITMO University Engineers Take First Steps Towards Creating Holograms of Underwater Objects
A group of researchers from ITMO’s Faculty of Infocommunication Technologies is conducting experiments on creating holograms of underwater objects. The first stage of the experiment, which involves taking high-resolution pictures of people moving underwater, took place at a swimming pool outside of St. Petersburg. Andrey Karmanov, the head of the project and an associate professor, told ITMO.NEWS about the challenges of creating holograms of underwater objects and the possible effect the project will have on robotics.

ITMO University Scientist Sergey Makarov Receives President of Russia Award
Sergey Makarov, Head of ITMO University’s Laboratory of Hybrid Nanophotonics and Optoelectronics and senior research associate at the Faculty of Physics and Engineering, became a laureate of the President of Russia Award for Young Scientists in the Field of Science and Innovation. The official results have been announced today, February 3, in Moscow, with the related decree published on the website of the president of Russia. The award recognized the physicist’s contribution to the studies of optical properties of resonant semiconductor nanoparticles the use of which can help improve solar cells and optical microscopes, and, in the future, advance in the fight against cancer as well as the creation of optical computers. Global Warming and Cold: How Refrigeration Industry Reacts to Contemporary Challenges
Global warming is one of the most discussed topics of our time. According to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) estimates, if we don’t take any action now the average temperature around the globe will rise by 3,7–4,8°С. Production of harmful substances used in the refrigeration industry contributes to the existing environmental problems. ITMO University has recently hosted Global Warming: The Main Challenge for Refrigeration Industry, a conference where experts in the field got to discuss the prospects of the industry, the ways to solve the issue of ozone layer depletion and transition to more eco-friendly technologies. ITMO.NEWS asked the participants about the main trends in the industry and the key projects currently in development.

Social Sciences in the Era of Social Networks: Studying Selfies, Likes and Geotags

The workshop Instagram the Almighty: Using Digital Sphere in Research was held within the framework of the Digital Humanities Week in St. Petersburg.
