Physicist Yuri Kivshar on Russian Science, Career Management and Metaoptics
Seven years ago, ITMO University launched the Metamaterials Laboratory. It all began with a grant won by Yuri Kivshar, a world-class scientist and one of Russia’s top physicists. Since then, the university has also launched the Department, and later, the International Research Center of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials. Under Yuri Kivshar’s leadership, the center’s researchers were the first in the world to venture into a completely new field: dielectric nanophotonics, or, as the scientist calls it, “metaoptics”. ITMO.NEWS met with Yuri Kivshar during his latest visit to St. Petersburg to discuss his current work, the future of the most unorthodox field of nanophotonics, and why a scientist shouldn’t stick with the same field of study for their entire life.

Today We Celebrate Victory Day
There’s probably not a single Russian family that wasn’t touched by the Second World War, or the Great Patriotic War as it is called in Russia and many former Soviet republics. The years 1941 – 1945 are engraved in all of us, even generations removed from the actual war, as the years of sacrifice, suffering, and faith in victory. It’s what we think about in times of hardship even now – the songs that we sang as kids at school about how victory is to be achieved it at any cost. And the cost was great.

ITMO University Developing New Design System
All of ITMO University’s online resources will soon be united by a common style; this year, the university’s UI/UX design team has begun the development of its own design system. Its introduction will increase the university’s brand recognizability as well as shorten the time needed to create websites and landing pages for its many departments, says Marina Kholodova, head of UI/UX Design at ITMO University. In the first stage, the project team will provide a landing-creation tool for internal customers. In the future, this will let university staff create and edit landing pages for various events on their own.

Applications Open for Russia-Japan Youth Exchange
This August, students from ITMO University have the opportunity to go to Japan as part of a Japanese-Russian youth exchange program. Nearly all of the trip expenses are covered by the receiving country; all the students have to do is to apply for it and wait. Russian Industry and Education Representatives Meet With Presidential Adviser on Internet Development
On May 3, members of the industry, education, legal professionals and others, concerned with Roskomnadzor federal agency’s blocking of various online services in connection with its blocking of the messenger service Telegram, met with German Klimenko, the Presidential Adviser on Internet Development. Earlier on, ITMO University’s Rector Vladimir Vasilyev addressed Mr. Klimenko in a letter, in which he described the consequences that blocking of IP-addresses in the “pursuit” after Telegram will have on the nation’s science, education and economy. After the letter evoked a wide public response, representatives of the university were also invited to the meeting. Anatoly Shalyto, head of ITMO’s Programming Technology Department, and Roman Elizarov, an ITMO alum and one of the creators of the Kotlin programming language, participated in the discussion.

ITMO University Team Wins First Place at Google Hash Code 2018
In late April, the final stage of Google Hash Code 2018, the programming competition which brings together thousands of students and professionals from Europe, Middle East and Africa took place in Dublin. ITMO University’s student team, which included Ilya Zban, Ivan Belonogov, Mikhail Putilin and Adam Bardashevich, all medal winners of the recent years’ ACM ICPC competition, secured the first place by outperforming 39 teams from 15 countries.
