  • ITMO University Debuts in THE Physical Sciences Ranking

    The results of this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) subject ranking in Physical Sciences have been unveiled at a press conference as part of the 22nd seminar-conference of Project 5-100. The Physical Sciences ranking was presented by THE’s team of top officials and Editorial Director Phil Baty. ITMO University made its debut in the ranking, placing 401-500.

  • QS BRICS 2017: ITMO Named Amongst 20% Best Universities

    In the recently published QS BRICS 2017 ranking, ITMO University showed great results by moving from 101st to 75th position among Russian universities, thus entering 20% of BRICS top universities. Among the factors that contributed to this rapid rise were an increase in indicators related to academic and employer reputation, publications in international journals and the amount of international staff and students.

  • Leading Russian Universities Open Doors to International Students

    An intellectual competition for future international Master’s students, the Open Doors: Russian Scholarship Project, is kicking off soon, with registration of participants beginning on Nov. 20, 2017. Winners will get an opportunity to study tuition-free, courtesy of the government of the Russian Federation, at Russia’s leading universities. The subject areas include Mathematics, Physics, Computer  Science and Economics. The contest is supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and is organized by the “Global Universities” Association.

    This week, the members of ITMO’s International Council gathered at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ for the 7th International Council meeting. Experts from all over the globe offered their thoughts on the most recent roadmap that was presented before the Project 5-100 International Council last month and contributed their ideas for future plans.

  • Tournament of the Two Capitals: St. Petersburg to Host Robots Battles This Autumn

    Have you ever seen how robots fight each other over "mountain" plateaus, build bridges across rivers, compete in racing rallies and work together in construction? On November 19, the participants of the Tournament of the Two Capitals will start their training. T2C is a robotics competitions for schoolchildren, bringing together best teams from Moscow and St. Petersburg. Students are challenged not only to work together in T2C, but also solve non-standard tasks. In the final challenge, the organizers give kids a really interesting task.   • First Graduates of ITMO and University of Rostock Double Degree Program Receive Diplomas

    On November 7, the first four graduates of the joint double-degree Master’s program between ITMO University and the University of Rostock “Business Information Systems” received their diplomas. Present at the ceremony were Kurt Sandkuhl, program co-lead, Vladimir Parfenov, head of ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty, Ekaterina Tulugurova, head of International Educational Programs Department, and the program’s professors.

  • ITMO Robotics Team Gets Gold at World Robot Olympiad 2017

    The World Robot Olympiad (WRO-2017) has just come to a close in Costa Rica. The international competition for talented school and university students involves participants from more than 60 countries. ITMO’s team of school students, led by coach Igor Lositskiy, has won the gold medal in the Open category’s Senior age group. Russian teams have also claimed gold medals in all three age groups of the Regular category (as well as both silver and bronze in the Elementary age group), the bronze medal in the Robot Football competition and another gold medal in the Open category.

  • ITMO Scientists Develop Gene Analysis Software to Combat Superbug Viruses

    Researchers from ITMO University and the Center of Physical and Chemical Medicine have developed an algorithm capable of tracking the spread of antibiotic resistance genes in gut microbiota DNA and revealed additional evidence of resistance gene transfer between different bacterial species. The method can not only contribute to the development of effective therapy schemes, but also curb the spread of superbugs. The results of the research were published in Bioinformatics journal.

  • WCSJ-2017: Making Science More Popular Than Politics

    The 10th World Conference of Science Journalists, the world’s biggest event in the field of science communication and journalism, took place on October 26-30 in San Francisco. The next conference will be held in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2019. ITMO University and the Association for Communication in Education and Science (AKSON) plan to conduct a pre-conference press-tour to Russia for foreign science journalists. Head of ITMO’s Center for Science Communication Dmitry Malkov has told us why such events are needed to develop science communication and journalism in Russia.
