  • Here's How ITMO's New Academic Degree System Will Work

    Last year, 19 universities and 4 scientific organizations in Russia were given the right to grant their own academic degrees, form thesis boards and outline their credentials. According to representatives of those universities that have already started this process, it will help Russian universities better integrate into the international community. At the same time, experts agree: more abilities means more responsibility. Maria Skvortsova, head of ITMO’s Office of International Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies, and Stanislav Reznikov, head of the Thesis Board Office, talk to ITMO.NEWS about how this change makes international partnerships easier, how the university plans to ensure a high quality of thesis defense and ITMO’s current efforts to establish this new system.

  • Stickerum Startup Brings Your Favorite Telegram Stickers to Life

    Social networks such as VK and the Telegram messenger app have made stickers hugely popular on the Russian internet. There are so many stickers available that you can express any emotion and replace whole sentences using them. However, the users don't just love the virtual stickers - you can find actual stickers of various brands, events, organizations and even famous personalities on laptops, smartphones, notebooks and more. Three students from ITMO University decided to bring the virtual stickers into reality, launching a startup called Stickerum, which lets Telegram users make real stickers out of virtual ones. Our special interview with Vitaliy Guryn, member of Stickerum’s team, gives us more insight into the new startup - and how to order your first set of stickers.

  • Tatiana's Day: Russia Celebrates Its Students

    Did you know that Russian students have a special day devoted to them? Every year, on January 25th, they celebrate Student’s Day. On this day in 1775, Empress Elizabeth signed a decree for the establishment of the first university in Russia, Lomonosov Moscow State University. Years later it became the day for all university students in the country, or “Student’s Day”. Student’s Day usually falls on the last day of exams and on the beginning of the students’ winter holidays

  • Generation Z: Who Are They?

    We don’t know much about Generation Z, since they are those born between the mid-1990s and early 2000s and now they are just graduating from college and entering the workforce. But these young people differ in many significant ways from their predecessors. Ksenia Pomogaeva, a first year Master’s student at ITMO University, conducted a research on Gen Z to find out the factors influencing their career choices and ways to motivate this new cohort of workers.   • ITMO Scientists' Collaboration with German and Swiss Colleagues Wins ERA.Net Research Grant

    A team of scientists from ITMO’s International Research and Education Center for Physics of Nanostructures, together with their colleagues from the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (Germany) and ETH Zurich (Switzerland), have been awarded a grant by the European initiative ERA.Net RUS Plus. Their three-year project concerns the modeling and design of new functional nanomaterials with potential applications in biomedicine and diagnostics. As the researchers note, nanomaterials based on ternary quantum dots can be used to create a sensor platform with unprecedented filtering and sensitivity capabilities for the purpose of multiplexed single-cell pathogen analysis. In the future, results of this research can contribute to the development of more precise and compact devices used for fluorescence analysis of nanostructures.

  • Information Security Company InfoWatch Opens Training Center at ITMO University

    ITMO University and InfoWatch, a Russian information security solutions company, have launched the ITMO-InfoWatch training center at the university. At the specialized computer room, students will learn to work with the company’s analytical systems. This way, they will learn firsthand from the developer about the modern tools used by one of Russia and CIS’s top IT companies.

  • First Renga Software Authorized Training Center Slated to Open at ITMO University

    The Renga Software company and ITMO University have signed a partnership agreement; among the partners’ future plans is the opening of Renga’s first authorized training center. There, instructors from ITMO University will introduce Renga’s BIM software to specialists whose previous experience involved working with two- and three-dimensional CAD software. Renga’s products will also be a part of the educational process at the university.
