Russian Scientists Propose New Approach to Measuring Atoms
Today, when new drugs are designed with the help of supercomputers, and electronic devices operate on a nanoscale, it is very important for scientists to understand how neighboring molecules behave towards each other. For this purpose, they need to know the sizes of atoms with the highest degree of precision. Modern quantum chemistry methods can be of help here, but the answers they offer are either not accurate enough or take months of work to produce. Scientists from ITMO University and their colleagues from the Russian Academy of Science proposed a new method of statistical analysis of intermolecular interactions and sizes of atoms. Their research made the front page of the ChemPhysChem journal.

Scientists from ITMO University Describe and Emulate New Quantum State of Entangled Photons
A research team from ITMO University, with the help of their colleagues from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Politecnico di Torino, has predicted a novel type of topological quantum state of two photons and proved their predictions experimentally. The method developed by the researchers relies on the analogy: instead of expensive experiments with quantum structures of two or more entangled photons, they have used resonant electric circuits that can be described by similar equations. The obtained results can be useful for the creation of optical chips and quantum computers without the need for expensive experiments. The research was supported by grants from the Russian Science Foundation and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research. The research was published in Nature Communications.

ITMO University Professor Joins Nanomaterials as Special Issue's Guest Editor
Today, physicists, chemists, and materials scientists around the globe seem to have immersed themselves in the world of nanostructures, which promises us materials for unique lasers, remarkably efficient solar cells, quantum computers, and high-resolution monitors. But how efficiently can modern physics explain all the processes taking place in the nanoworld? Do theoretical and experimental physicists have enough reliable and simple tools to solve fundamental problems concerning nanomaterials? These questions are the subject of the special issue of the international peer-reviewed journal Nanomaterials". Its guest editor is Anatoly Fedorov, the head of the International Research and Education Center for Physics of Nanostructures and a professor at ITMO University.

ITMO University PhD student Karina Pats on Her Job in the Field of Bioinformatics in Kazakhstan and her Career in Academia
Karina Pats graduated from ITMO University’s Applied Computer Science program last year, and at the moment is getting a PhD degree. She also works on a big project at Nazarbayev University (Kazakhstan) under the grant for research of nuclear receptor action mechanisms. Karina shared with ITMO.NEWS why research of these mechanisms can potentially help development of a new medicine, how bioinformatics work in Kazakhstan, and why she decided to pursue a career in academia instead of the industry.

Scientists Propose New Nanoparticles That Can Potentially Be Used to Treat Cancer with Magnetic Fluid Hyperthermia
A group of Russian scientists have synthesized manganese–zinc ferrite nanoparticles that can potentially be used in cancer treatment. Due to their unique magnetic properties, the particles can serve as deactivators of affected cells while having almost no negative impact on healthy tissues. The results have been published in the Journal of Sol-Gel Science and Technology.

IEEE Scholarship recipient Anna Kuzikova: Science is What Drives Self-improvement
Anna Kuzikova, a “Terahertz Biomedicine” Laboratory employee, who is studying at ITMO University's Department of Photonics and Optical Information Technology, has won an international competition for the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society scholarship. It is one of the most prestigious scholarships for young scientists studying radio-frequency, microwave and terahertz radiation. No more than twenty people a year receive such an award. However, this is the seventh victory of an ITMO University student in the last twenty years. The jury praised Anna for her work on the diagnosis of cancer with terahertz radiation. An ITMO.NEWS correspondent met with the honored young scientist and learned how this research can help doctors, what Anna Kuzikova is going to do after this project and why she considers competitiveness as one of the main drivers of science.

ITMO University Launches Laboratory of Genomic Diversity
In 2020, ITMO University has launched the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity under the academic supervision of the renowned American scientist Stephen J. O’Brien. This new department is to become an important Russian center of bioinformatics, where scientists will work on collecting genomes of different living organisms and studying genetic diversity of animals and people. This work should help in fighting many diseases while also providing a better understanding of the ways in which biodiversity changes on our planet. ITMO.NEWS met with the coordinators of this emerging laboratory and learned what research they plan to do in the near future.

ITMO Scientists Develop an Algorithm That Makes the Inference of Population History Models for People and Animals Easier and More Accurate
Bioinformatics scientists from ITMO University have developed a software tool, which quickly and effectively analyses genome data to infer probable models of demographic history of specific species, such as plants, animals or humans. Using complex calculations, the software can suggest with a very high degree of probability the course of history of a particular group of living organisms. This includes identification of periods with mass extinction or mass population growth and information about contacts with other populations of the same species in the past. The scientists’ article about this methodology has been published in the journal Giga Science.

A research team from ITMO University has come up with a new technology for creating diffraction and microoptical elements on glass for use in photonics, laser systems and microfluidics. With its help, various diffraction elements for laser beam profile transformation and splitting can be produced fast and without much expense.
