ITMO University’s National Center for Cognitive Technologies Launches a Contest for the Best Model of Commercialization of Innovative Technologies
The fate of an innovative invention famously depends not only on the talent and abilities of its creators. For a new technology to get traction on the market, it has to be promoted in the right way – and this is the task for managers, not inventors. Recently, ITMO University’s National Center for Cognitive Technologies has launched a contest for the development of a commercialization program for its products and services. Applications are accepted until the end of May, and everyone can submit theirs – winners are to get money prizes and collaboration offers.

R&D Projects Competition Winners On Their Creations and University Support
In late March, the results of ITMO’s practice-oriented R&D projects competition were announced. A total of 25 participants presented their ideas with only 10 getting grants from the University. These grants don’t only include financial support, but also help with project paperwork, and team work management. ITMO.NEWS got in touch with the heads of the winning teams to ask them why their projects are special and how they are planning to use the grants.

NTI Olympiad Winner Vsevolod Kosarev: The Best Prize is Knowing Where to Go Next
The National Technological Initiative (NTI) olympiad for high school and Bachelor’s students has been held since 2015 and is part of the national program for technological development. Among its organizers are more than 30 Russian universities, including ITMO University, Skoltech, Moscow Polytechnic University, MIPT, St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Tomsk Polytechnic University, and others. This year, more than 200 university and 1,200 school students took part in the final stage, with over 50,000 applications submitted in total. Among the winners (as part of team Antares) was Vsevolod Kosarev, a first-year student at ITMO University’s Faculty of Infocommunication Technologies. In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, Vsevolod told us about the competition, working on smart enterprise systems, and how the online format changed the team’s approach to their project.

Me & My Robot: ITMO Roboticists Feature in a Documentary by American Filmmaker Mark Decena
The members of ITMO University’s robotics team from Creative Robotics Lab have been put in the spotlight in the documentary by an American documentary maker and director Mark Decena. Me & My Robot follows the young roboticists as they compete for gold at the World Robot Olympiad. The documentary has been presented at CPH:DOX, one of the largest and most prestigious international documentary festivals currently being held online. You can watch the film for free until April 5.

I Am a Professional Competition for Students: ITMO in Top Ten Universities by the Number of Winners
Last week, results were announced of the latest, third run of the national competition for students “I Am a Professional”. ITMO retained its position in the ranking of the universities with the highest number of winners: 94 of its students made it to the finals this year, with 10 winning bronze, six – silver, and four – gold medals. Most of the winners emerged in the nominations traditional to ITMO: Robotics, Programming and Software Engineering, Information and Cyber Security. ITMO University Team Takes Third Place in Bauman Robotics Club Tournament
ITMO University’s first-year students visited Moscow to participate in the Bauman Robotics Club tournament, which was held at the Institute of Control Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The St. Petersburg participants were the only team that wasn’t representing Bauman Moscow State Technical University at the competition, and took third place on its completion. ITMO.NEWS contacted the team to find out about their experience.

10th Birthday of International Sports Programming Project Codeforces Celebrated at ITMO University
Codeforces, one of the most famous competitive programming platforms in the world, has celebrated its tenth birthday. It was created by then Saratov State University lecturer Mikhail Mirzayanov at the end of the 2000s as an online community for people who like to solve programming tasks. Now Mikhail works at ITMO University, which is a second home for Codeforces. ITMO.NEWS attended the celebration party and asked its participants how Codeforces had influenced their life and the entire community.

Hack the Sea: Results of First Hackathon by ITMO University and Wärtsilä Digital Technologies
The two-day Hack the Sea hackathon has recently been held at ITMO University. This is the first hackathon organized by ITMO together with the Finnish company Wärtsilä Digital Technologies, which manufactures navigation equipment for large watercraft. Over 20 students, most of them representing ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty, had to develop an app for facilitating the navigation around the Finnish company’s headquarters. It’s Your Call! Winter School Kicks Off at ITMO University
Over the course of five days, students from all over Russia will be attending lectures, taking part in workshops and preparing team projects. The winners will get the opportunity to enroll in ITMO’s Master’s and PhD studies without entrance examinations. The event’s general partner is Sberbank of Russia.
