Towards Optical AI Architectures: First Robust 3D Photonic Topological Insulator Developed at ITMO
Scientists from ITMO University have become the first team to create a nonconductive structure that makes it possible to control light in a 3D space without losses, even when the material has defects. It’s a fully dielectric 3D photonic topological insulator that paves the way for new compact, scalable, and robust photonic components, including integrated circuits and optical chips. In the future, they may become the key hardware foundation for next-gen computational AI architectures. The results of the study were published in Nature Materials.

Scientists from ITMO, MIPT, and Skoltech Develop Laser-Controlled System for Reprogramming Tumor Macrophages
A team of researchers from ITMO, Skoltech, and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) have developed a new technology for photothermal cancer immunotherapy that can control a tumor’s immune response with high precision. The method is based on light-sensitive microcarriers that, when subjected to a laser, release an immunomodulating drug at the right time and in the right amount. This helps switch a tumor’s defence cells, macrophages, which usually support tumor growth, from “defence” to “fight” mode. This joint study was described in a paper published in Biomaterials Advances.
