Scientific St. Petersburg: See a Different Side to the City
St. Petersburg isn’t just about the Palace Square, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, sphynxes, buns, and shawarma (the things it’s commonly associated with in Russia). It’s here that the Russian Academy of Sciences was founded and where the great Russian researchers, from Lomonosov and Mendeleev to Pavlov and Vavilov made their contributions to science. These days, the city is still a magnet for students and young scientists. In October, visitors and locals will get to explore St. Petersburg as a research city thanks to a new project by ITMO’s Center for Science Communication, developed with support from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

ITMO Physicists Twist Electrons for Particle Accelerator Experiments
Researchers from ITMO University are the first to have found a way to twist electrons with a laser beam, opening up a path towards experiments with twisted electrons in particle colliders – a feat previously considered impossible. The discovery will make it possible to learn more about the structure and behavior of protons and neutrons that make up atom nuclei, as well as look into the nature of quarks, some of the smallest known matter particles. The results of the study are described in a paper published in Physical Review A.

Help the Dark Store: Winners of Hackathon by ITMO and VkusVill Grocery Chain
100 students from Moscow and St. Petersburg took part in the recent hackathon Help the Dark Store, organized by ITMO and VkusVill, a chain of grocery stores. Over three days, they analyzed the operations of the company’s dark stores to suggest ways to improve product storage, assembly of orders, and stock-taking. The best projects will be implemented at the company.

ITMO and St. Petersburg School Launch Nanotechnologies Lab
Lyceum No. 150 in the Kalininsky District of St. Petersburg is now home to the new Nanotechnologies Laboratory, launched in collaboration with ITMO’s International Laboratory “Hybrid Nanostructures for Biomedicine.” At the lab, senior students will have advanced classes in physics, chemistry, and biology, learning to synthesize several types of nanoparticles. Students will then present their work at a summer school at ITMO, with members of the best teams gaining an additional five points to their Unified State Exam scores when applying to the university.
