It’s been a long, eventful year; let’s take a look back at the events, names, and ideas that defined 2018 for ITMO University.

ITMO Master’s Students Win National Lighting Design Competition
Second-year students of the Lighting Design Master’s program at ITMO University are named among the winners of Russia’s biggest lighting design competition. Winners received their awards during the international exhibition Interlight Moscow powered by Light + Building. Three projects by ITMO students were included in the top-10 list of interior lighting designs.

ITMO Scientists Win Scopus Award Russia 2018
The winners of Scopus Award Russia 2018 have been announced in Moscow. Organized by the major publishing company Elsevier, this award is given to scientists whose works are published and cited the most. This year’s winners of Scopus Award Russia are two researchers working at ITMO University: Anvar Zakhidov, a professor of the Texas University at Dallas and head of ITMO’s Laboratory of Hybrid Nanophotonics and Optoelectronics; and Valentin Milichko, a research fellow at the University’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering, who won the award in the category “Young Scientists”.

ITMO University Up by 100 in QS World University Rankings
The results of this year’s QS World University Ranking, published annually by the Quacquarelli Symonds company, have now been published. This year, QS assessed 4,763 universities (out of the world’s 26,000) from 151 countries, which is 463 more educational establishments than last year. The final ranking includes 1,011 universities from 85 countries. Last year, ITMO University made its debut in the ranking in the 601-650 position, which placed it in the top 2% of the planet’s universities; this year, the university was ranked 511-520, almost a 100 positions higher than its previous result.

Stephen Hawking: Life in Books
Stephen Hawking, one of the greatest physicists of our time, died on Wednesday, 14 March, at the age of 76. Stephen Hawking is best known for his outstanding book A Brief History of Time and his enormous zest for life (he floated in zero-gravity and even wanted to go to space, suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). He helped popularise science and became “the No. 1 celebrity scientist”. In April 1988, his book, A Brief History of Time, was published and became a best-seller. Then the books Black Holes and Young Universes (1993) and The World in a Nutshell (2001) were published. In 2005 A Brief History of Time was reprinted. But this is not the whole list of Stephen Hawking’s books. So, we decided to review all his books and describe the role of these books in his life.

ITMO University Climbs 100 Positions in QS Computer Science & Information Systems Subject Ranking
QS has revealed today its 2018 World University Rankings by Subject. This year, one of the most influential rankings in the world reviewed the performance of over 1,000 universities from 151 countries. QS researchers ranked the universities in 48 subjects and five general subject areas. ITMO University is now present in three subject rankings and, for the first time ever, is included in the Engineering & Technology subject area. ITMO’s highest position is in the Computer Science & Information Systems ranking, where it has gone up by 100 spots as compared to last year.

ITMO Professor Emeritus Yuri Kivshar Among Winners of Web of Science Awards 2017
The Web of Science Awards 2017 were presented in Moscow to scientists and scientific organizations for their contribution to science. Sixteen Russian scientists received awards, including Yuri Kivshar, research director of ITMO’s Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials and a professor of the Australian National University.

ITMO Dean Sergei Kozlov Receives Auspicious Award
Sergei Kozlov, Dean of ITMO’s Department of Photonics and Optical Information Technologies was officially awarded the honorary title "Honored Science Worker of the Russian Federation". The title is awarded for significant contribution to the development of science, creation of new scientific schools and outstanding achievements in training young sciencists. The official ceremony for the award was held on December 15 in Smolny Palace, which is the seat of St. Petersburg’s administration. Professor Kozlov told ITMO.NEWS about his scientific interests, ideal team, criteria for successful research and development and new promising areas in photonics.

ITMO Robotics Team Gets Gold at World Robot Olympiad 2017
The World Robot Olympiad (WRO-2017) has just come to a close in Costa Rica. The international competition for talented school and university students involves participants from more than 60 countries. ITMO’s team of school students, led by coach Igor Lositskiy, has won the gold medal in the Open category’s Senior age group. Russian teams have also claimed gold medals in all three age groups of the Regular category (as well as both silver and bronze in the Elementary age group), the bronze medal in the Robot Football competition and another gold medal in the Open category.

KronBars Tops List of Russia's Best Student Sports Clubs
ITMO University’s student sports club KronBars has topped the ranking of Russian student sports clubs. Association of Student Sports Clubs of Russia (ASSC) published the ranking on its web-site. The ranking accounts for the clubs’ activities from September 2016 to August 2017. It includes 56 participants from 8 federal districts of Russia. In addition to that, this year’s ranking will be a part of the finalists’ qualification criteria in the contest "Best Student Sports Club of 2016-2017 Academic Year". The contest will be held in Kazan in late November.
