  • ITMO Edu.Stars Winner Anton Starovoytov on Teaching Lab Classes Online

    Anton Starovoytov started teaching as a PhD student. Now he is the vice dean of ITMO’s Faculty of Photonics and a researcher at the university’s International Research and Educational Center for Physics of Nanostructures. He also develops educational projects, such as virtual simulations of physical equipment for lab projects on nonlinear optics, which will make such equipment more accessible. Last year, Anton Starovoytov was named one of the winners of the ITMO.EduStars contest.   • ITMO Physicists Prove Feasibility of Non-Radiating States in Compact Acoustic Resonators: New Discovery Will Benefit Development of Acoustic Antennas and Sensors

    Researchers from ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics have succeeded in disproving a non-existence theorem which states that oscillations in open resonance systems must fade out by radiating energy into the surrounding medium. The physicists were able to calculate the shapes of acoustic resonators for which this theorem would not apply. In the resulting system, the energy of oscillations does not radiate into the surrounding space and remains within the resonator. Results of this research will facilitate the development of acoustic antennas and sensors.

  • ITMO.EduStars Winner Svetlana Kurashova: “To Me, Teaching is a Source of Joy”

    Svetlana Kurashova, a physics lecturer at ITMO University, became interested in this field as a child and worked towards becoming a professional since school. After graduating from Leningrad State University (now St. Petersburg State University), she joined ITMO and has been teaching physics here for 28 years. Last year, she received an ITMO.EduStars award as one of the university’s best lecturers.   • ITMO University and Bosch Launch Research Project in Active Matter Physics

    ITMO University and Bosch corporation have signed an agreement on conducting research in the field of active matter physics, a field hitherto not studied in Russia. Within the joint project, researchers are working with clusters of macro- and microparticles that can migrate and regroup into new structures. In the future, this project will result in new technologies for the energy  industry, manufacturing, and healthcare.

  • ITMO PhD Student ‪Pavel Tonkaev‬ on His Path to Science and Applied Nanophotonics

    Pavel Tonkaev started his Master’s at ITMO University in 2017 after graduating from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU). Since his second year here, Pavel has been studying perovskite materials in nanophotonics and optoelectronics. Current studies suggest that these materials may not only become the future of solar energy but also set the stage for various other technologies, from the creation of sensitive photodetectors to the study of living cells. In this article, Pavel talks about how to get into research in the second year of your Bachelor's, how his discoveries can help people in the future, and why scientists shouldn’t stick to one perspective.

  • New Interdisciplinary Collaboration Combining Particle Physics and Nanophotonics

    Headed by Rector Vladimir Vasilyev, a delegation of scientists from ITMO’s School of Physics and Engineering has recently returned from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) located in Dubna, Moscow Oblast. JINR is an international intergovernmental scientific organization that conducts research in the fields of nuclear and particle physics, as well as the physics of condensed media. The visit paid by ITMO University’s physicists will result in a large-scale interdisciplinary collaboration and the launch of a new field of research for the university.

  • Scientists Develop Compact Nanolaser with Unique Properties

    A team of researchers from the ITMO University’s School of Physics and Engineering, the Nonlinear Physics Center at the Australian National University (ANU), and Korea University has developed a compact nanolaser based on a photonic crystal waveguide with super-high efficiency. The device is a photonic structure and is notable for its small size compared to its counterparts. An article about this device was published in Nature Communications.
