Moscow vs. St. Petersburg: Which Russian Capital is Better?

While every country in the world has one capital, Russia has two. Moscow is the official capital, whereas St. Petersburg used to be a capital before and is now frequently called the "Northern capital of Russia". People from these cities always argue which of them is better, and never come to a conclusion. For citizens of other Russian cities, who are planning to move, it is even harder to decide where they want to live. This article focuses on the differences between Moscow and St. Petersburg and explores what life in these two cities is like.

A Belgian Student in Russia

Hello everyone! My name is Alexia, I am 22 years old, and I come from Belgium. I am currently doing an internship at the Foreign Language Training Center and I’ll be here until the end of March. Yeah, I am the one sitting at the back of the office who cannot answer your questions, sorry… But what is a Belgian student doing in St. Petersburg, you might ask… Well, I am a fifth-year student at the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation at the University of Mons; and Russian and English are my two working languages. I fell in love a few years ago with St. Petersburg and with the Russian culture, so it was an obvious choice for me to intern here. For this article, I will focus on a few points that, I think, represent the most significant differences between these two countries so dear to my heart. So, if you want to learn a bit more about my tiny Belgium and how it differs from Russia, then please read the article below!

A Train to Vyborg!

Looking for a short getaway close to St. Pete? Why not consider the historical town of Vyborg? The author of this blog shows how it could happen…

Unusual Places Outside of St. Petersburg

The city of St. Petersburg abounds in places of interest and popular landmarks. In the four years of my life here, I’ve visited practically all of the most famous ones, with some of them really proving worthy of the hype. But they all share a significant disadvantage — crowds of tourists on weekends, and sometimes the inability to get anywhere either for free or outside the tour group. Therefore, like many other people, now I prefer to look for less classic routes and places to relax. Here I will try to talk about some of them.

ITMO University Newcomer’s Guide: Student’s Perspective

Math can be confusing, right? But what is even more confusing is being a freshman at a university, especially if it is as unusual as ITMO. I am a fourth-year student at the Faculty of Control Systems and Robotics, and I also previously studied at the Information Technologies and Programming Faculty. In this blog, I want to share my experiences as well as some tips and tricks regarding studying at our university.

Who Are Our Graduates?

Not only ICPC champions or professional researchers graduate from ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty. Many of the graduates are programmers who founded their own businesses or built a career with successful startups. In this installment of his blog, ITMO University’s Professor Anatoly Shalyto considers the many trajectories and possibilities of professional development and talks about the career opportunities that are only limited by what a student wants.

My Impressions After 5 Months in St. Petersburg

With a sense of satisfaction, I feel that I have made the most of every opportunity I had here. ITMO University plays an important role in this statement and also plays the living experience per se.

From High School Graduation to Diploma: Expectations vs Reality

It is always challenging to find yourself and stand up for your ambitions. The last year of school is an enormously significant period when choices surround you all the time. Moreover, when it comes to picking a university, you have no other way but to rely on someone’s words because of your own lack of experience. There are many articles which can clearly illustrate students' lives and their opinions, but sometimes it is better to compare two subjects in order to get the desired result. That is why I conducted a survey and gathered information about the most crucial aspects of students' current life which they imagined differently.

The Best of Upcoming Music Concerts in St. Petersburg in 2020

It is already the beginning of 2020, so the new concert season is ready for its kick-off. Even though most of the summer festivals haven’t revealed their line-ups yet and we will get many surprises later, a bunch of shows have already been announced. Here’s a quick overview of seven most interesting, in my opinion, music events that will happen in St. Petersburg in 2020!

New Year’s resolutions (kind of)

So 2019 is almost over. What? So fast? (Checking the calendar twice) or was it as fast as we remember? This year was quite ambiguous. But what did we learn or not learn thanks to this year?
