Hi, please introduce yourself to our readers.
Greetings! I’m Raden Galen, an international student from Indonesia, an ordinary boy on a journey to uncover dreams that are still hidden. Currently, I’m a first-year Bachelor’s student at ITMO. I love exploring new things, improving myself, pursuing my goals, and enjoying whatever life brings my way.
Tell us something about your hometown.
I’m from Lumajang, a beautiful small town in East Java, Indonesia. It’s surrounded by stunning natural landscapes and the community is very close-knit. Growing up there taught me the best values of friendship and togetherness.
Sounds awesome! Where did you study before joining ITMO?
Before ITMO, I studied at Thursina IIBS, a boarding school in Malang. Living away from my parents taught me independence and how to take responsibility for myself. Going there was my own decision and it shaped me in many ways.
And why did you decide to study in Russia?
My interest was sparked by Russia’s technological advances, as well as culture and history. I felt challenged to step out of my comfort zone and experience something entirely new and Russia seemed like the perfect choice.
How did you discover ITMO?
I was inspired by an Indonesian senior who shared her experiences at ITMO on social media. Seeing how positive her experience was encouraged me to check out ITMO myself.
That’s great. So, what are you studying at ITMO?
I’m currently studying computer systems and technologies. It allows me to immerse myself in programming at a fundamental level. What excites me the most is that I have access to a fantastic platform for actual projects, competitions, and collaboration with gifted peers and teachers.
What motivated you to study this subject?
I’ve been fascinated by technology since childhood. It not only solves real-world problems but also paves the way for personal and professional growth. I want to turn my skills and ideas into something meaningful and impactful while building a successful future for myself.
How would you describe your life in Russia so far?
Life in Russia has been an adventure. It was challenging at first to adapt to the lifestyle and the cold weather, but the rewards have been immense. It’s not just about studying – I’ve met people from all over the world, learned new perspectives, and grown as a person.
Do you have a favorite place to hang out in St. Petersburg?
I enjoy spending time in Chinese or Vietnamese restaurants with friends. We eat and talk about life, college, work – everything. But I also cherish my alone time in libraries or cafes, where I can focus on homework or just relax with music and a cup of cocoa or coffee.

Are you living in a dormitory or an apartment?
I’m living in a dormitory, which is quite far from most places. If the commute is under an hour, I consider it close! My daily routine involves a 10-minute walk to the tramway stop, which is actually the first stop. My destination is always the last stop – Ladozhskaya metro station. From there, I can go anywhere in St. Petersburg. Despite the distance, I’ve adapted to the lifestyle well.
Have you faced any challenges since arriving in Russia?
Learning the language and adapting to the cold weather was tough initially. Living far from the city center can also be inconvenient. But these experiences have taught me patience and resilience, which I truly value.
How do you like to spend your free time?
I enjoy listening to music, reading books, watching movies, and playing the guitar. Writing poetry is another passion of mine, it helps me express my thoughts and emotions creatively. I’d love to explore more libraries, cafes, and museums, but my schedule doesn’t allow much time for that right now. I also love traveling to natural places like mountains, waterfalls, and beaches.
Oh, wow. So, have you traveled in and around St. Petersburg?
Yes, I’ve visited Peterhof, Pushkin, Gatchina, and Yagodnoe. Each one of them has its own charm and beauty. I hope to explore many more beautiful places in Russia in the near future.

Do you like Russian food? Do you have a favorite dish?
To be honest, Russian food doesn’t really suit my taste. But I do enjoy eating pyshki, a type of Russian doughnut. It’s simple but delicious – perfect for a quick snack.
So, what are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to pursue a Master’s degree – either at ITMO or in another country. Alternatively, I might start my career in the tech industry. Since I’m still in my first year, my future plans are flexible, but I’m keeping all possibilities open.
Wonderful. Do you have any advice for future ITMO students?
Make the most of your time here. Explore the opportunities, meet people, and step out of your comfort zone. Learn to balance your time – know when to be serious and when to relax, when to be productive and when to recharge. It’s all about learning, growing, and creating memories.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I’ll never regret choosing ITMO – not just for the academics, but for the journey itself. It’s been an incredible experience, especially because of the amazing people I’ve met along the way. In the end, it’s always about the journey, not the destination.
