  • Serious Science: How School Students Create Projects at Sirius and Develop Them Under the Guidance of ITMO

    This summer, dozens of Russian school students came to Sirius to work on projects in 12 different tracks, from Nanotechnology to Cognitive Studies, New Materials and Smart cities. Researchers from ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering participated in the program as mentors and project developers. With their guidance, the students developed breakthrough nanostructured antibacterial surfaces and a metalens for focusing Wi-Fi radiation. To continue working on their projects, the students came to ITMO where they not only attended lectures but also got a chance to visit ITMO’s many laboratories and work on real-life lab equipment.   • Chemistry Without Borders: 30 Russian and British Researchers Discuss Collaboration in Liverpool

    An international workshop on the development of complex materials and self-regulating chemical systems took place in Liverpool this October. It was organized by ITMO University and the University of Liverpool with support from the British Council. The main feature of the event was its interdisciplinary approach, as it brought together not only specialists in the field of chemistry, new materials development and energetics, but also physicists and IT, management systems, and robotics specialists. Over the course of three days, 30 Russian and British researchers shared the results of their projects and discussed prospects for collaboration.

  • Slovenian Researcher Luka Stopar: “Data Analysis and Visualization is Art and Science Combined”

    Luka Stopar, a researcher at Jožef Stefan Institute (Slovenia), has recently delivered a lecture at ITMO University. He is currently working on several grand European projects, including RENOIR, which aims to create new mechanisms of social data analysis. During his lecture, Luka Stopar described the different ways in which machine learning and intelligent data analysis may be used in the visualization of diverse data sources. In this interview, Dr. Stopar told ITMO.NEWS how the development of data analysis and visualization is changing the media and why journalists are not losing their jobs to computers anytime soon.

  • ITMO Student Klim Gavrilov Wins Gold at FIA Motorsport Games in Italy

    Klim Gavrilov, a second-year student of the Faculty of Software Engineering and Computer Systems, is a gold medal-winner of the FIA Motorsport Games. The event, best described as the Olympics of motorsport, took place from October 31 to November 3, 2019 at the Vallelunga circuit in Italy. Klim Gavrilov competed – and won – in a racecar adorned with ITMO University’s logo.

    Cross-cultural studies expert Mona Abdel Malik Khalil has earned her PhD at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and is the author of numerous scientific articles that focus on culture and communication between Russia and Egypt.
