Researchers Discover New Nanoparticles with Exclusively Lateral Light Scattering
An international team of physicists has produced first evidence of particles capable of scattering light in lateral direction by suppressing forward and backward scattering. The researchers studied the physics behind this phenomenon and confirmed their theoretical results with an experiment in the microwave spectral range, proving that lattices or metasurfaces made of these materials can be completely invisible. These results can be used in a variety of applications including light routing, binary-coded holograms, and sensors. The study was published in Physical Review Letters.

ITMO Researchers Win Russian Academy of Sciences Award
The Russian Academy of Sciences has recently announced the recipients of its annual award recognizing outstanding young scientists and students of Russian higher education institutions. Among this year’s winners are four research associates from ITMO University: a group of scientists comprised of Valentin Milichko, Dmitry Zuev and Sergey Makarov, who took first prize in the field of general physics and astronomy, and ITMO University Master’s student and engineer Artem Ashirov, who won the prize for a project of applicational significance.

ITMO Researchers Develop Alternative Liquid-Based THz Radiation Source
Polar liquids, such as water, are powerful absorbents of electromagnetic waves in the terahertz range. For that reason, they were never considered as potential THz radiation sources. Last year, researchers from ITMO University and the University of Rochester proved that liquid-based radiation sources can be no less effective than traditional ones. In their new study, the staff of ITMO University’s Laboratory of Femtosecond Optics and Femtotechnologies present their research on the generation of THz radiation in liquid jets of various kinds. In the future, these findings can be used to create new alternative sources of THz radiation. The research was published in Optics Express.

How Minkowski–Bouligand Dimension Helps Determine Signature Authenticity
Scientists from ITMO University proposed a new method for identifying signatures that is based on the Minkowski–Bouligand dimension. This method allows to discern an authentic signature from a forged one with high precision, and can be used for determining the authenticity of art pieces.

New Method for Analyzing Genes Activity Helps Predict Cancer Patients Survival
An international team of researchers from ITMO University and the University of Washington in St. Louis has developed a new method for determining cell types in tissue samples. The scientists identified typical signs of genes activity in different cell types and, using this as a basis, made a model capable of recognizing different cell types in mixed samples. As this approach works for all tissues, it can be used to, for example, establish how the ratio of different cell types is associated with the survival of patients with different types of cancer. The results are published in Nature Communications.

ITMO Scientists Make First-Ever Measurement of Nonlinearity in Terahertz Frequency Range
Researchers from ITMO University have, for the first time in history, managed to directly measure the nonlinear refractive index of matter in the terahertz range. The results of their experiments were compared with previously existing theoretical predictions in order to confirm the presence of nonlinear effects. The obtained data can be used to control light, as well as in fundamental and biomedical research. The results have been published in Optics Express.

ITMO Physicists Found New Way to Optimize Nanoparticles and Light Interaction
ITMO scientists have been the first to describe new features of dielectric nanoparticles’ optical response using an improved method for electromagnetic field analysis that can take into account more complex configurations of bias currents inside the objects. These effects allow to better understand the processes in nanoparticles and adjust their behavior for more efficient light control in devices such as nanolasers or sensors. The results have been published in Laser and Photonics Reviews and selected as materials for the issue cover.

Summer Bridge Scholarship by ITMO’s Russian-French Lab: Join an Interdisciplinary Project and Get Your First Scientific Paper Published
Right after finishing their summer exams, students from ITMO and other universities will have the opportunity to participate in the Summer Bridge Scholarship, a paid internship at ITMO University’s Russian-French Laboratory of Hybrid Crystal Nanophotonics. The organizers will choose a total of 15 interns (Bachelor’s and Master’s students), who will work on fundamental and applied interdisciplinary scientific projects, from developing new types of nanoparticles to creating nanomaterials for long-term storage of foodstuffs and drug delivery. The internship will last for 2.5 months, after which all participants will get a one-time money reward. Other advantages include opportunities to get your article published, experience of working as part of an international team, and enrolling in a joint Russian-French PhD program. How to Catch a Particle: Physicists Found a Way to Make Ion Traps More Efficient
Scientists from ITMO University have developed and applied a new method for analyzing the electromagnetic field inside ion traps. For the first time, they explained the field deviations inside nonlinear radio-frequency traps. This allows for the reconsideration of nonlinear traps applications, including ion cooling and research into quantum phenomena. The results are published in the Journal of Physics B.
