ITMO’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering Launches a Projects Contest
Project activities allow students to more creatively approach problem-solving and trains them for work in business environments and promotion of their own, and practically useful, products. To enhance the applications of project-oriented approach in education, ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering launched a contest for filling of the positions of developers and mentors of educational projects in the subject area of physics. The winners will receive financial support and the opportunity to bring their ideas into reality both at ITMO and the Sirius educational center in Sochi.

ITMO Technopark Resident Wins International Contest On Blockchain Applications For Self-Driving Cars
Lately, more and more companies and government agencies, including those in Russia, are starting to use blockchain in their day-to-day operations. For example, blockchain is the Federal Service for State Registration, Cadastre and Cartography’s solution for ensuring better protection for their stored data. The technology is expected to be even more widespread in the future, and that’s why the startup DCZD.tech, a resident of ITMO Technopark, aims to develop modern solutions in this promising field. Its achievements include recent wins in two international contests.

Russian Programmers Prepare For ICPC-2019
On December 2, ITMO University was among the universities that hosted the semi-finals of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC). More than 100 student teams from the European part of Russia, the Ural region, Belarus and the Baltic states competed for the right to take part in the final stage of the world’s largest programming contest, which will take place in Porto, Portugal next year. The team from Lomonosov Moscow State University, champions of this year’s ICPC, emerged as winners in the semi-final stage.

Beautiful Physics: ITMO Scientist Wins Award of Wikipedia’s Science Photo Competition
Research associate at ITMO’s Laboratory of Femtosecond Optics and Femtotechnologies Semyon Smirnov has received an award of the Science Photo Competition hosted by Wikipedia. Performing an experiment, the scientist managed to get a snap of a femtosecond laser spark and the cone-like supercontinuum it created. This kind of radiation has a wide range of applications in many scientific fields, from the study of the properties of new materials and biologic tissues to the optimization of data transfer systems. The researcher shared about finding beauty in research and using photography to popularize science with ITMO.NEWS.

Alfa-Bank Scholarship Winners on How to Innovate the Most Innovative University Out There
Alfa-Chance, a scholarship contest organized by Alfa-Bank, has recently come to an end. After three competition stages, the organizers and expert committee selected the best three out of 63 shortlisted candidates to be awarded a scholarship prize: Ekaterina Subbotina, Ivan Timakhovich and Timofey Timofeev. Short-Term Academic Mobility Programs: How to Get University’s Financial Support
Apart from going on semester-long academic mobility programs, ITMO’s students can also get financial support for participating in short-term international events and research internships. Such support covers up to two short-term events a semester, so even if you’re planning to go study abroad in spring, you still have the chance to participate in various conferences, forums, workshops and other academic activities during the winter semester.

Let Your Imagination Run Wild at this Tech Search-and-Rescue Solutions Contest
Every year, thousands of people get lost in the wild. It takes a hundred of rescuers to find one missing person. Forests prove to be the most complex environment for life brigades, who need state-of-the-art equipment and devices to be able to address tough search conditions. Last week, ITMO University gave the floor to the representatives of the ‘Sistema’ charity fund, who unveiled the public program of the ‘Odyssey’, the first research project in Russia aimed at using tech for dealing with social problems. The ‘Odyssey’ is a series of contests, the first of which is dedicated to new-generation search and rescue technologies and will span 18 months with the prize pool of 75 million roubles. Participants are set the challenge of finding an ideal tech-based solution to ease the search of people lost in the woods.
