ITMO Students Perform Karl Capek's R.U.R. on Stage
On May 18, a premiere performance of “Rossum’s Universal Robots” was staged in English by the Foreign Languages Training Center at ITMO University. The play was directed by Valentina Diulger with the script adapted by Alexandra Nikitina.. Students from both ITMO University and the Higher School of Economics acted in the play. It was attended by students and lecturers, friends and relatives of the actors and participants of IEEE ICPS 2018 conference.

Diving into Internationalization: ITMO’s English Upgrade
The word “robot” was first introduced to the English language in 1921 by the Czech playwright Karel Čapek. His play, Rossum’s Universal Robots (RUR), explored the dark reality of humanity’s future if we build robots to do our bidding. Last Friday’s performance of RUR by ITMO students is one of the many projects and developments advanced by the Foreign Language Training Center, established just over three and half years ago.

Arizona University Expert: Pros and Cons of English as a Global Language
In our global world, English is being increasingly regarded as an inevitable necessity, the common global language that everyone has to learn. The main problem with that is that native English speakers have an advantage over non-native speakers, and it feels like a new round of colonialism, noted Karen Barto, a teacher of English as a Second Language from the University of Arizona, who came to ITMO University to the More than ESP conference. Ms. Barto also told ITMO.NEWS about why you can’t judge people by how they speak English and why the most important thing is to be open-minded.

Arizona University Expert: Why People Don’t Want to Learn Foreign Languages

New Head of US English Language Office on How to Improve English-Language Education in Russia and the World
Universities all over the world are putting efforts into creating an English-language culture among their students, professors and researchers, as such knowledge lets universities reach out and enter the international education market, explained Kelli Odhuu, new head of the regional English Language Office at the US Embassy, during her visit to ITMO University’s International Office. She learned about the university’s efforts to popularize the English language and spoke about the general issues that universities worldwide encounter in this endeavor.

Digital Humanities: Education in 21st Century
Modern information technologies are helping linguists, sociologists, culturologists and art experts quickly complete tasks that would have taken them years otherwise. New tools don’t just make things easier, but offer a new outlook on the challenges faced by researchers in humanities. Antonina Puchkovskaya, a teacher at ITMO’s Foreign Languages Department, has recently returned from a trip to New York where she held a workshop titled “How to Make Your Humanities Course More Digital: the Syllabus Redesign” as part of the NYC Digital Humanities Week. She spoke to ITMO.NEWS about the benefits of digital technologies in education and humanities.

From Equatorial Guinea to Russia
Bernardino Ondo Abaga Ada and Juan Zacarías Okue Ondo Mbang, two international students in their third year of studies at the Faculty of Technological Management and Innovation, came to study in St. Petersburg four years ago from Equatorial Guinea.
