  • 10th Bike Ride with Rector: Long-Time Participants Share Favorite Routes and Experiences

    This Wednesday, students, staff, and friends of ITMO University took part in the 10th Bike Ride with ITMO’s Rector Vladimir Vasilyev. Traditionally held every spring and fall – the start and end of the biking season, – the event sees students, professors, researchers, and associates of the university ride together on a route past the picturesque locations of St. Petersburg’s Primorsky District: from the Victory Park, past the Zenit Arena stadium and Yakhtenny Bridge, and to the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg Park. ITMO.NEWS spoke to some of the event’s long-time participants to learn about their favorite experiences, the role of biking in their everyday life, and their suggestions on making the ride even better.

  • Winter Universiade Participant Vadim Shvedov on Maths and Curling

    The 29th Winter Universiade has recently ended in Krasnoyarsk. This event, which takes place once in every two years, is often called the Olympics for young people. ITMO University student Vadim Shvedov participated in its curling competitions held on March 2-10. Upon his return from Krasnoyarsk, he spoke to ITMO.NEWS about the difficulties their team had to face, and how knowledge in the field of advanced mathematics helps play curling.

  • ITMO Student Picked as Torchbearer of 2019 Winter Universiade

    Roman Kozlov is a student of the Master’s program Bioengineering and Biotechnical Systems, as well as the captain and manager of the University’s boxing team. This fall he was also chosen to be one of the torchbearers of the 19th International Winter Universiade. In an interview for ITMO.NEWS, Roman explained what it’s like to carry the torch and discussed the stereotype of less-than-athletic scientists.

  • ITMO’s KronBars Tops List of Russia’s Best Student Sports Clubs

    Last week, the Association of Student Sports Clubs of Russia (ASSC) celebrated its fifth anniversary and organized the National Forum of Student Sports Clubs, which took place in St. Petersburg and brought together 1,000 participants from 73 regions of Russia (250 universities). During the course of a week, they discussed ASSC’s development strategies and the future of student sports in Russia and chose the best student sports club. ITMO University’s club KronBars topped the ranking.

  • Two Cities, 200 Participants, One Ride: Bike Ride with Rector 9.0

    Yesterday marked the ninth time when ITMO’s students, teachers, staff and friends met with Rector Vladimir Vasilyev for a picturesque bike ride in St. Petersburg’s seaside district. This time, they were accompanied by the participants of the METANANO 2018 International Conference that is taking place in Sochi. This year’s ride brought together more than 200 people, including the University’s research associates, exchange students from different countries, and even 2010 Nobel Prize winner in physics Prof. Andre Geim.

  • Master of Sports Anastasia Murzina: “Orienteering Helps Better Understand Multidimensional Space”

    It is quite common that a favorite hobby or sports activity helps one solve research tasks. Einstein, for instance, often played music while contemplating his ideas. ITMO Master’s student Anastasia Murzina focuses on chemoinformatics and works for the Computer Technologies international laboratory. In her free time, she’s already travelled all over Russia and became a Master of Sports in orienteering. We spoke to Anastasia about how orienteering helps her solve research tasks, what kinds of knowledge are most relevant for a programmer, and why sport and science have a lot more in common than one would think.

  • KronBars and ASSC Hold St. Petersburg Regional Forum of Student Sport Clubs

    This week, ITMO University’s KronBars sports club and the Association of Student Sports Clubs of Russia (ASSC) held the St. Petersburg regional forum of student sport clubs. Representatives of about 20 sports clubs from St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region discussed motivation issues, attended workshops on teambuilding and sports events, as well as participated in a regatta on the Neva river.
