  • Young Scientists Awarded ITMO University’s First Own Academic Degree Diplomas

    In 2017, ITMO University, together with 18 other higher education institutions, was granted the right to award candidate of sciences and doctor of sciences academic degrees, as well as to establish its own academic degree councils and define the latter’s remits. The university held its first independent thesis defenses in December last year. The list of successful candidates includes Galina Lavrentyeva and Andrey Oleynik, whose research on solutions to different audio-visual data tasks yielded them the degree of a candidate of sciences. They have received their diplomas during a recent official ceremony that took place at ITMO University.

  • Nanophotonics' Most Topical Fields: Research on Hybrid Metal-Dielectric Structures

    Hybrid metal-dielectric structures hold great promise for the development of new data recording devices, improved sensors and optical chips. This is the field that Yali Sun, a PhD student from ITMO's Faculty of Physics and Engineering, focuses on. Back in China, she obtained education in the field of electronics, and then chose to focus on nanophotonics.   • ITMO Scientist’s Thesis Named Best at the Australian National University

    ITMO University scientist Alexey Slobozhanyuk has been proclaimed the winner of the Jagadishwar Mahanty Prize. Established by the Australian National University (ANU), this annual award is given to the researcher with the best PhD thesis defended in the School of Physics and Engineering of this university. As part of his studies on the joint ITMO University-ANU PhD program, the young scientist researched metamaterials and application of their unique properties in the development of innovative devices of the future, such as highly effective MRI coils and next-generation optical electronic systems. It is this work that was recognized by the prestigious 2018 Prize. In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, Alexey expounds on the prospects for his research field and his experience of doing fundamental and applied research at the same time.

  • PhD Vitaly Aksenov: Coding For Someone Other Than Myself Is Boring

    Vitaly Aksenov, staff member of ITMO’s Information Technologies and Programming Faculty, graduated from school at the age of 15. At the age of 24, he got his PhD at a leading French university. During the past several years, Vitaly has been working in the field of concurrent computing, solving fundamental tasks that have to do with optimizing data structures.   • Results of the 2018 Admissions Campaign at ITMO University

    The 2018 admissions campaign at ITMO University has come to a close; the lists of students admitted to Bachelor’s and Master’s programs have been published (links are in Russian). This year’s Bachelor’s students have, as usual, demonstrated high Unified State Exam (USE) scores. A large share of the newly-admitted Master’s students are graduates of other universities.
