ITMO’s Gennady Korotkevich Wins VK Cup
Gennady Korotkevich, a PhD student at ITMO University and multiple-time winner of various international programming competitions was named VK Cup’s top participant in the Engine category. This year’s winners of VK Cup split between themselves a prize sum of 2,752,512 rubles – in binary, this particular number converts to an elegant 1010100000000000000000.

ITMO.STARS 2020: Participants And Results
Just recently, ITMO University enrolled its third selection of students who were admitted via the ITMO.STARS individual achievements contest. The program offers talented applicants who couldn’t get a tuition-free position and can’t afford to pay for their education an opportunity to study at the university’s expense. This year, 15 students got the opportunity.

ITMO Researchers’ Project Named Top Innovative Product by St. Petersburg Committee for Science and Higher Education
A project by ITMO University’s SCAMT Industrial Lab has been named the winner of the 2019 St. Petersburg Competition of Best Innovative Projects in Science and Higher Education. The awards ceremony took place as part of the 12th St. Petersburg International Innovation Forum. The winning project, First Aid, is an innovative treatment for post-surgery scarring, stretch marks, cuts, and burns for patients of all ages. The project is being developed by the Master’s and PhD students of ITMO’s ChemBio Cluster. Olga Sokolovskaya, the head of the project, spoke with ITMO.NEWS about this invention, results of the team’s research, and their future plans.

FIA Motorsport Games Winner Klim Gavrilov: Racing Keeps Me Moving Forward
Earlier this month, the Russian racecar driver and ITMO University student Klim Gavrilov finished first in the Touring Cup of the FIA Motorsport Games 2019. The competition, which took place on the Vallelunga circuit in Italy, is dubbed the Olympics of motor sports. In addition to winning international competitions, Klim is also studying to be a programmer and plans on launching a capsule collection of T-shirts. In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, he speaks of his racing career, design, future plans, and how programming can help with driving.

ITMO Student Klim Gavrilov Wins Gold at FIA Motorsport Games in Italy
Klim Gavrilov, a second-year student of the Faculty of Software Engineering and Computer Systems, is a gold medal-winner of the FIA Motorsport Games. The event, best described as the Olympics of motorsport, took place from October 31 to November 3, 2019 at the Vallelunga circuit in Italy. Klim Gavrilov competed – and won – in a racecar adorned with ITMO University’s logo.

ITMO University Among Leaders of 5-100 Russian Academic Excellence Project
On October 25-26, 2019 the Council on Global Competitiveness Enhancement of Russian Universities (Project 5-100) convened for its 12th session in Moscow. Over the course of two days, universities participating in Project 5-100 presented the results of their work and their development plans for the future. Upon conclusion of the session, the project’s participants were sorted into three groups, ITMO University being ranked among the top 7.

Gennady Korotkevich Wins Google Code Jam For The Sixth Time
Once again, ITMO PhD Student Gennady Korotkevich won the Google Code Jam international competition. This time, the event took place in San Francisco on August 9. This was the sixth victory in the programmer’s winning streak. Apart from Gennady, the Japanese contestant Makoto Soejima and the contest’s first-timer Andrew He from MIT got into the top-3. Every year, over 50,000 programmers from all over the world participate in Google Code Jam, with only 25 making it to the finals. Among the latter were also ITMO’s students Boris Minaev and Evgeny Kaplun.

It All Depends on Effort You Put In: ITMO Master’s Student on Internship at Gazprom and How to Win It
Bumping into an unknown task is one of the main fears all participants of academic competitions have when starting out. Yet this was exactly the situation that Pavel Zhdanov, a student of ITMO University’s Big Data Financial Technologies Master’s program, found himself in during the GPN Intelligence Cup case-championship. He rose to the challenge, solved everything he had to solve, and won an internship at Gazprom Neft, the largest oil-producing company in Russia. ITMO.NEWS met with Pavel to find out what working at Gazprom is like, how to nail all job interviews and why soft skills are so important.
