Perovskites are nifty little things, to say the least. Last month, we mentioned how they contribute to the creation of next-gen lasers. This time, a team from ITMO has suggested a new manner of assessing the quality of perovskite nanoparticles used in all sorts of flexible devices – another plentiful area of application for this class of material.

Metasurfaces are another common fixture in our science reports; the latest is an international co-development between Russia, Switzerland, and China. Researchers from several universities worked together to develop the first-ever metasurface with properties that are adjustable in the middle-infrared range. By shifting away from light-absorbing materials, they’ve created a solution that is almost instantaneously responsive to incoming pulses and would therefore be highly useful in spectrometers and other systems involving light-based transmission.
