ITMO Student Became the Youngest Winner of Young Runet Leaders Award
Daniil Samoilov, a third-year student at the Faculty of Laser Photonics and Optoelectronics, received the Young Runet Leaders Award in the nomination Digital Agency. The student became the youngest participant and winner of the first national competition among IT specialists. In this interview with ITMO.NEWS, he shares his experiences of participation in the competition, running his own digital agency, as well as his university studies and the applications developed by his team. Different Approaches, One Goal: International Week of Social Entrepreneurship at ITMO University
All throughout the past week at ITMO University, seven teams from Russia, the US and Switzerland were developing social projects to then present them to the judges. The students and lecturers forming part of the groups interacted with their colleagues, discussed the difference in social entrepreneurship approaches in their countries, and exchanged experiences in order to come up with the most comprehensive solution for their tasks. UMNIK Grant Program: ITMO Students’ Winning Projects
The Foundation for Assistance to Small Innovative Enterprises has recently announced the results of the grant program UMNIK, aimed at training specialists for the digital economy of Russia. This time, several ITMO University students received grants of half a million rubles each. ITMO.NEWS talked to some of the winners and asked them about their projects and plans for the future.

EmPaci: Russia Joins International Project on Implementing Participatory Budgeting
Russia has joined the European Empowering Participatory Budgeting in the Baltic Sea Region (EmPaci) project. Its goal is to create the mechanisms that will allow to involve more citizens into the process of participatory budgeting. The project is implemented by a consortium of 20 partners from Germany, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Russia. ITMO University acts as a coordinator from the Russian side. The participants discussed the tasks and implementation plan of the project as part of the international seminar “Electronic participation and participatory budgeting: best practices in the North-West of Russia”.

Serious Science: How School Students Create Projects at Sirius and Develop Them Under the Guidance of ITMO
This summer, dozens of Russian school students came to Sirius to work on projects in 12 different tracks, from Nanotechnology to Cognitive Studies, New Materials and Smart cities. Researchers from ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics and Engineering participated in the program as mentors and project developers. With their guidance, the students developed breakthrough nanostructured antibacterial surfaces and a metalens for focusing Wi-Fi radiation. To continue working on their projects, the students came to ITMO where they not only attended lectures but also got a chance to visit ITMO’s many laboratories and work on real-life lab equipment. Emotions You Can Touch: St. Petersburg Researchers' Unique Science Art Project
A group of St. Petersburg media artists and scientists have found a way to make creation of art more accessible to blind and vision-impaired people. As part of their project, artists translate emotions into abstract graphic artwork and use them to create a sculpture garden on the premises of the Konstantine Grot boarding school for the visually impaired. Mikhail Klimovskiy, advisor to ITMO University Rector, and Yuri Didevich, a filmmaker, media artist and independent researcher, acted as the project’s curators. ITMO Accelerator’s Graduates at St. Petersburg Digital Forum
August 30 marked the end of the 2nd St. Petersburg Digital Forum, a platform for communication between public authorities, transnational companies, startups, and citizens. The program of the forum included round tables and panel discussions of the most topical questions concerning digitization. Participating in the forum were, inter alia, three graduates of the Future Technologies accelerator, the prototype of ITMO University Accelerator. Read on to learn more about their projects.

ITMO Accelerator: New Formats and How to Participate
For three years now, ITMO University’s entrepreneurship and innovation infrastructure includes a business accelerator. This is a model of early-stage support for businesses created by ITMO students which implies intensive development of a project in the shortest period of time possible. Starting from the new academic year, the accelerator has changed its structure and expanded on the formats of its interaction with the students. It can now offer its services to those who don’t yet have a clear-cut idea for their project. The accelerator staff note that the new programs give all participants the opportunity to fast-track their way to new practical knowledge and skills. Applications are already open. 2019 Light Nights in Gatchina: Projects by ITMO Participants
On August 16-17, 2019, the annual international festival of light art “Light Nights in Gatchina” took place at the Gatchina Palace and Estate Museum. Each year, the festival brings together students of Russian and international universities, artists, designers, multimedia professionals and creative collectives and design studios from Russia, Europe and beyond. 2019 has been the third year that the students of ITMO University’s Master’s program “Lighting Design” participate in the official selection of the international festival. This year, it was ITMO’s students Lyubov Angelova, Mikhail Andreev, and graduate Valeria Molodovskaya that took part in the event’s art residency.

ITMO Fellow Fabio Bonsignorio and Professor Alexander Kapitonov: Research Reproducibility Will Generate a Sea Change in Our Economy
Fabio Bonsignorio is one of the most prominent researchers in the field of biorobotics and technologies of the future. He is also a participant of the ITMO Fellowship program. Together with Alexander Kapitonov, associate professor at the Faculty of Control Systems and Robotics, the scientist works on a range of projects on research reproducibility and openness, using blockchain technologies for communication between automated systems, and other fields. ITMO.NEWS spoke with the two researchers to find out how blockchain and robots can change the industry, what is research reproducibility and why it is important.
