• ITMO Students Develop Multiplatform App for Social Project on Urban Orienteering

  In February 2019, ITMO University’s Faculty of Infocommunication Technologies hosted a career guidance hackathon. Among the winners were four students – Ilya Zakoulov, Maksim Pahmurin, Denis Arlakov, and Rostislav Nurdinov – who developed an app for a social project about urban orienteering. After the competition, the team decided to continue developing their app, now in collaboration with the team of that social project. Now, their multiplatform app has exited development and become a part of the project. More about the app, urban orienteering, and the boons of cooperation below.

• ScienceMedia Hackathon for Aspiring Journalists at ITMO University

  This year marks the fifth time that St. Petersburg hosts ScienceMedia, a competition that brings together talented and motivated students interested in science journalism. This was the second time that the event was held in the format of a hackathon. A total of 75 students from 25 Russian regions took part in the competition. In the course of two days, they listened to lectures, solved practical tasks, and were given 24 hours to come up with a full-fledged longread covering the tours they’d been to. • Conference School on Photonics, Radio Physics and Nanotechnologies at Sirius

  The second Conference School on Photonics, Radio Physics and Nanotechnologies took place in Sochi from November 2 to 5. The event was organized by the Sirius educational center in collaboration with ITMO University; scientists from Jean Lamour Institute (France) acted as invited speakers. • Bend it Like Beckham: ITMO Winners of VK Hackathon Develop App for Honing Football Skills

• Education Goes Digital: Results of ITMO DigiEduHack

  On October 3-4, ITMO University hosted ITMO DigiEduHack, a hackathon on digital education organized as part of the European Commission’s major initiative. The event brought together dozens of teams from the UK, Italy, Finland and other countries that collaborated on projects in the field of digital education. ITMO University became the only hackathon’s venue in Russia. The competition in St. Petersburg gathered over 100 participants: students, lecturers, university graduates, school children and professional programmers.

• ITMO University Students Win The Largest Hackathon in History

  On September 27-29, the Russian city of Kazan hosted the final round of the Digital Breakthrough competition for IT specialists, designers, and managers in the field of the digital economy. This event was included in the Guinness Book of Records thanks to the record number of participants. Among the winners were ITMO University students: Kirill Pugin, a student at Information Technologies and Programming Faculty, and Valeria Timofeeva, a Master’s student at the Faculty of Technological Management and Innovations. • Participate in ITMO DigiEduHack and Win 5,000 Euros

  October 3, 2019 marks the start of ITMO DigiEduHack, a hackathon in digital education organized by ITMO University’s Department for Educational Policy. Part of the European Commission’s major initiative, the event will bring together dozens of teams from the UK, France, Italy, Russia and other countries who will collaborate on projects in the field of digital education and compete for the main prize of 5,000 euros. All ITMO University students and staff are invited to participate in the hackathon. The registration has already started and will last until September 25.

Yaroslav Kapustin, a student of St. Petersburg’s school No. 225 and a participant of the Congress of Young Scientists, has presented a project that lets its users connect digital devices into a unified data network in the absence of mobile connection. Yaroslav spoke with ITMO.NEWS about his project Radio Chain and how he was able to develop his own projects and win at hackathons while still in school.

• ITMO Students About Hackathon at National Center for Cognitive Technologies

  How to determine users’ gender based on the data garnered via social media websites? How to process meteorological data? How to predict and manage customer outflow with the use of email marketing services? These and other questions were tackled at an interdisciplinary hackathon hosted by the National Center for Cognitive Technologies. Any ITMO University student could take part in the competition. The only condition for participation was a willingness to learn more about artificial intelligence.
