  • Project by ITMO Robotics Team Named Best at Baltic Science and Engineering Competition

    ITMO University’s team from the Creative Robotics Laboratory of the School of Computer Technologies and Control have for the fifth time emerged winners of the Baltic Science and Engineering Competition. The main prize in the robotics category went to Vasily Dunaev and Dmitry Kharlapenko from the Presidential Physics and Mathematics Lyceum №239, who presented a model of an autonomous system capable of looking after easily-damageable fruit and berries and delivering them to customers when ripe. It wasn’t the first win for their Strawberry Fields project, who’d already claimed first place at the World Robot Olympiad 2018 in Thailand. ITMO.NEWS met the team to talk about how they prepared for the competition and what they expect to come of their project in the future.

  • Over 300 Students From 14 Universities Compete for Potanin Scholarship at ITMO

    For the second year in a row, ITMO University became the only venue in St. Petersburg to host the onsite round of the Potanin scholarship contest. In the course of three days, some 360 Master’s students from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Krasnoyarsk, Yekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk competed in business games, learned to work in teams and presented their results to the expert panel of judges. Participants with the best results will be awarded with a monthly scholarship of 20,000 rubles. More on the contest in this article.

  • ITMO Students' Facial Recognition System Wins 'Best Creative Solution' at Fintech Cup

    The future of the banking industry becomes increasingly interconnected with biometric technology. Sberbank has already started implementing the latest technologies in this field and collecting its clients’ biometric data. Experts estimate that two million bank clients will use biometrics by 2020. This is the main focus of the Interface project conducted by students from ITMO’s Faculty of Infocommunication Technologies. The project even got the prize for the best creative solution at the Fintech Cup-2018 Championship.   • WorldSkills Winner on His Competition Experience

    At the end of November, Moscow hosted the final round of the II National Championship of Vocational Skills organized by WorldSkills. ITMO University Master’s student Vladislav Nesterov took second place in the Cryogenic Technology and Conditioning Systems category. With each year that passes, the competition is becoming more and more popular: 93 universities were among the participants in 2018, which is ten more than last year. A total of 400 students from leading Russian higher education institutions from 43 regions came to Moscow to compete for victory.   • Microbial Fuel Cell, Space Station, and Electronic Guide: Finals of Quantoriada Competition

    The final round of the Quantoriada international engineering competition for school children has recently kicked off in St. Petersburg’s Planetarium. It’s up to participants to decide what kind of device they want to develop; this year, they could choose between a space station, a drawing robot, an electronic guide, a microbial fuel cell, and other valuable devices. ITMO University’s SCAMT Laboratory has provided a platform for the competition.   • I am a Professional: Qualification Round Starts with Over Half a Million Participants in the Game

    The registration for this year’s national competition for students ‘I am a Professional’ kicked off on September 26 and ended on November 22. A total of 523,612 students submitted their applications, which is 78% more than the last year’s number of 295,000 participants. ‘I am a Professional’ offers its winners a golden opportunity of preferential access to Master’s and PhD programs of leading Russian universities, as well as an internship in a major company and a money prize. Having taken off on November 24, the competition’s qualification round will last all the way to December 9.

  • Gennadiy Korotkevich Wins 2018 Topcoder Open Marathon

    ITMO University PhD student Gennady Korotkevich took first place in this year’s Topcoder Open Marathon Competition, which was held in Texas (US) on November 13-16. During a ten-hour final round, he left behind 11 other participants. What is more, this year, Gennady Korotkevich and Boris Minaev, ITMO graduate and ACM ICPC-2015 champion, got to the finals in the Algorithm track.
